Woman Bursts Into Tears After Receiving Irrelevant Christmas Gift From Her MIL Based On Her Husband's Recommendation

Redditor u/SavagePlatanus posted to Reddit's popular moral judgment community r/AmITheAsshole to share this story of her mother-in-law's Christmas gift to her: a gluten-free cookbook. The problem is that she isn't the one that's gluten-free. Her husband is. It appears that the mother-in-law bought OP the gift based on what her husband recommended. That doesn't really make it a gift for OP, but a gift for her husband — but of course, it seems the expectation is that OP cooks and bakes all these gluten-free meals for her husband. It's really annoying for people to do something like this; give the gift to the actual person who wants it! At the very least gift it to both of them.

    Font - I opened it and immediately said, "oh I think you gave me the wrong box, this must be for you." Inside was a recipe book of gluten free cooking. Here's the thing - I am not gluten free. He is. I looked at him confused and he, still happy and unaware of the shit storm of emotions about to rain upon him, told me he that he suggested this gift to his mom. I was incredulous, and let him know that this was a gift for him, not for me. This is basically like giving a mom a vacuum for Christmas -

Yeah, she could have done better in shopping, but she probably didn't know what to get you and asked him for advice. The issue is that your husband took it as an opportunity to get a gift for himself. If you'd been struggling with gluten free cooking and looking for a set of recipes, that's one thing. But suggesting it off the cuff? Nah, he was getting himself something.

He also bought you a last minute present that he printed out in the morning. He wants that you cook for him and said to his mom probably "buy this book, she will be happy about it". But in the end it is just for him.

It would be like knowing your husband likes music so you buy him yoga relaxation tapes so he can play them for you. Your MIL and her son are either clueless or jerks. And I'd bet it was personalized for him. It sounds like his family is bad at gifts. If the ONLY gift you got from him was something he bought this morning, that he threw into a discarded gift bag from yesterday, then he's ridiculously thoughtless.
